Lab-Grown Diamond vs. Natural Diamond
Lab Grown Diamond or Natural Diamond?
Both are Diamonds—but their formation is fundamentally different.
This guide explains the similarities and differences clearly and helps you make an informed personal decision.
The key difference: origin
A Natural Diamond forms through natural geological processes deep inside the Earth. A Lab Grown Diamond, by contrast, grows under controlled technical conditions.
Both fundamentally consist of crystalline carbon and possess the characteristic properties of a Diamond.
Two different paths to a Diamond
Natural Diamond
Natural Diamonds form over very long geological periods under natural pressure and temperature conditions.
Lab Grown Diamond
Lab Grown Diamonds are created using technical growth methods such as CVD or HPHT. This also produces a Diamond crystal.
Why do they look so similar?
Both have a Diamond structure made of crystalline carbon.
Both possess the exceptionally high hardness characteristic of Diamond.
With a good cut, both can display typical brilliance, fire, and scintillation.
Lab Grown Diamond vs. Natural Diamond at a glance
| Characteristic | Lab Grown Diamond | Natural Diamond |
|---|---|---|
| Formation | Controlled technical growth | Natural geological formation |
| Base material | Crystalline carbon | Crystalline carbon |
| 4C | Carat, Cut, Color, Clarity | Carat, Cut, Color, Clarity |
| Cuts | Round and Fancy Shapes | Round and Fancy Shapes |
| Colors | Colorless to Fancy Color possible | Colorless to Fancy Color possible |
| Origin determination | Reliable differentiation is carried out using gemological examination methods. | |
Can you tell the difference with the naked eye?
For high-quality cut Diamonds, reliable origin determination based solely on normal viewing is not meaningful.
Gemological laboratories use specialized examination methods and instruments to identify natural and lab-grown diamonds.
Are both evaluated according to the 4Cs?
The familiar quality characteristics Carat, Cut, Color, and Clarity play an important role in both natural and lab-grown diamonds.
Carat
Describes the diamond’s weight.
Cut
Significantly influences the visible light performance.
Color
For white diamonds, describes the color grade; Fancy Colors are assessed separately.
Clarity
Describes internal and external clarity characteristics.
What role does a laboratory report play?
An independent gemological report documents the examined characteristics of a specific diamond and, for lab-grown diamonds, identifies its laboratory origin accordingly.
Depending on the report, details such as carat weight, measurements, color, clarity, cut characteristics, polish, symmetry, and additional comments may be included.
Why can prices differ?
The pricing of natural and lab-grown diamonds does not follow exactly the same market conditions. Origin, supply, production costs, rarity, demand, and the diamond’s individual quality characteristics can influence the price.
Market prices can change over time. Therefore, a piece of jewelry should not be chosen solely based on an assumed future increase in value.
Is a Lab Grown Diamond automatically more sustainable?
Lab Grown Diamonds do not require traditional Diamond mining. However, this does not automatically mean that every laboratory production process has the same environmental footprint.
Energy source, production location, manufacturing process, transportation, and jewelry production can all influence the overall environmental footprint.
That is why we prefer a nuanced approach instead of blanket sustainability claims.
Which choice is right for me?
There is no universal answer as to which Diamond is the better choice for everyone.
A Lab Grown Diamond may be right for you if …
- you consciously want a Diamond of laboratory origin.
- you find modern Diamond technology interesting.
- you would like to compare different sizes, shapes, or Fancy Colors.
A natural Diamond may be right for you if …
- natural geological formation is particularly important to you.
- you are consciously seeking a naturally formed Diamond.
- the origin story should be part of the personal meaning.
The Key Differences
- The fundamental difference lies in how they are formed.
- Both possess the characteristic properties of a Diamond.
- Both can be assessed according to gemological quality characteristics.
- The origin can be professionally determined through gemological analysis.
- Price structures and market conditions may differ.
- Personal meaning and desired origin also play a role.
Make informed decisions.
